Welcome
The Sustainable Engineering Group (SEG) was in established in 1999 at Curtin University, to promote the uptake of sustainable engineering and waste minimisation activities in Western Australia. The Centre is also a core contributor to the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing, whose research focus concentrates on the engineering programs to improve efficiency and the sustainability in the mining industry.
The applied research at the Centre is focused around four themes: eco-efficiency and industrial ecology, green engineering technology and innovation, waste management policy and process, and sustainability measurement including the development of sustainability metrics and ongoing life cycle assessment research.
Engineering a Cleaner environment
The Sustainable Engineering Group (SEG) helps businesses in the community achieve economic and ecological efficiency in material and energy use while minimising waste and emission generation; vital for business sustainability.
SEG's green engineering research into Filtration and Air Pollution Control, Engineered Nanoparticles production and Bio-Processing of Industrial Wastes, all provide important improvements in the way industry manufactures and its impact on the environment.
Our research on Life Cycle assessment helps to determine the environmental performance of products and processes which then results in better product design, resource use, waste minimisation and sustainable market advantage.
The Centre's research into waste management solutions assists with the development of legislation and policies to ensure more efficient waste management through, Extended Producer Responsibility schemes, cleaner production techniques and increased eco-efficiency practices to reduce waste production.
SEG also develops tools to assist in the development of decision making metrics and frameworks that assist in the assessment of business or technology resource efficiency and long term sustainability.
Sustainable Engineering has also developed one of the Worlds largest Industrial Symbiosis project, here in Western Australia, that involves the Kwinana community, environment and local Industrial area in achieving resource efficiencies through regional and supply chain synergies that reduce air emissions, water consumption and encourage energy efficiencies all resulting in significant sustainability outcomes for the long term.
Sustainable Engineering ... engineering a more sustainable future.
