The Western Australian Business and the Environment Manual

INTRODUCTION
Your roadmap to Business and the Environment

Business and the Environment is a tool to assist you to manage your business and, naturally enough, will be used a little differently by every person who opens it. This is one of the reasons the information has been organised into topics, with lots of 'hotlinks' so that you can go straight to what you need.

It can also be read comprehensively from beginning to end, taking you step-by-step through answers to the questions people in business commonly ask.

As you progress through the resource and toward your own vision, the picture moves from the broader perspective of the environment into a typical workplace. So, from a 'bird's eye' view of a typical community depicted in the section on Environmental Management, it is not long before you can more closely examine your business' impacts and move into the training room depicted in the section on Environmental Management Systems (EMS).

If you have applied some of the tools and resources provided along the way, you will have all that is necessary to make environmental management work to reduce your costs and impacts.

Each topic of the handbook has a similar structure and the largest of these - Managing Your Impacts - is further broken down into subsections.

Each topic includes:

Quick reference guide - Involves just the bare essentials - ideal for wide distribution around the workplace.

Detailed information - Subject background, the benefits of active management, and your obligations and contact details for relevant authorities and resources.

Illustrated guides and case studies - 'How to' guides, examples of businesses that have already made a difference, and definitions of necessary concepts and terminology.
