Guidelines for minimising waste in residential construction

Developed by the Centre of Excellence in Cleaner Production in collaboration with the Western Australian State Government's Department of Housing and Works (Homeswest) and their builders. This Cleaner Production initiative was proudly supported by the Waste Management and Recycling Fund.

A series of practical guidelines was developed for people who work in the residential building industry and are interested in minimising construction waste, improving their material efficiency, and reducing the impact of housing construction on the environment. It is recommended that builders distribute the relevant guidelines to their sub-contractors.

The Guidelines

Architects and Designers Electricians and Telecommunications Technicians
Estimators and Schedulers Roof Carpenters
Purchasers and Specifiers Roof Tilers
Builders and Supervisors Renderers and Plasterers
Waste Contractors Ceiling Fitters and Flushers
Excavators Carpenters and Joiners
Concreters Interior Tilers
Bricklayers Painters
Plumbers and Drainers Builders Pack (All Guidelines)

The Guidelines were developed following the comprehensive monitoring of wastes generated during the construction of eighteen brick and tile homes in Perth, Western Australia during early 2001.

A series of Waste Notes that were developed prior to the guidelines provide detailed information on wastes generated on residential construction sites
