| Helping the Health Care Industry improve its Eco-Efficiency
Unlike industrial operations that typically have a few large volume waste streams, hospitals generate different volumes of a wide variety of wastes and emissions. Apart from patient care the hospital performs a number of other functions including transportation, food services, cleaning, heating/cooling, photographic processing education, and sterilisation of surgical equipment.
Major areas of environmental concern in the health care sector are:
- Energy Efficiency
- Water Conservation
- Hazardous waste: clinical waste, liquid/chemical, radioactive and pharmaceutical
- Cleaning & Disinfecting
- Waste minimisation
- Wastewater discharge
- Health industry specific substances: mercury, solvents, silver, etc.
Health care facilities can reduce their environmental impacts by making changes in purchasing, materials management, workplace procedures and waste management. Cleaner Production includes the use of materials, processes and practices that reduce or eliminate the quantity and toxicity of the wastes and emissions at the source of generation.
The Centre of Excellence in Cleaner Production has developing a set of information sheets covering the following topics:
Many hospitals have already taken steps to reduce their environmental impacts and improve their financial performance. Some examples featuring resource efficiency, waste minimisation practices and packaging alternatives include:
